Actually, the little girl couldn't even say chrysanthemum, but she was still a very good go player. She looked carefully at the piece of paper which told her that Black had to try to save her stones marked with little triangles.
It wasn't quite like an ordinary go problem, so it took her a little while
to sort out the first few moves, but once she had
done that she was able to rattle off the ladder moves as quickly as she could
pick up the stones. She enjoyed the neat pattern of the finish - it reminded
her of her kaleidoscope again - but as she
gazed at the final position she realised with a start that it looked just like the
top of one of
those shining lanterns she had seen when she had been taken for a special treat
to the Japanese Gardens one autumn evening when - yes, that was it! - all the
chrysanthethingummybobs were blooming.
That made her all the more determined to see what the next problem had in store. It was a middle-sized ladder, and it had an even stranger name...
