Problem 1
Black 1 is the right first move, but he goes astray with 3 and White ends up living thanks to miai at A and B.
This Black 1 is the right continuation after the 1-2 exchange above. However, Black 3 is the wrong follow-up (ko).
Finally, Black finds the right branch to follow. White 2 is to defend against the double atari at A, but Black 3 makes B and C miai. If Black 3 is at B, White 3 creates a ko.
Note: If you buy this book and have only minimal Japanese, be aware that all three of these diagrams are marked "Right Answer". It is the text below each that explains why two of them are only half right. And ditto elsewhere. But with that caveat, we think you can get a lot of value out of the book.
This is straightforward failure for Black.
Problem 2
First, the right answer.
This Black 1 fails. After 6, A and B are miai for White.
This try is failure because it ends in ko.
